ECHA: Inspectors to check products sold online that contain harmful substances

The eighth Forum reinforcement project (REF-8), focuses on the online sale of substances, mixtures and products, and has entered its operational phase and will last until 31 December 2020.

The project is aimed at products intended for the general public and professionals, available in the online stores of private companies and on market platforms, such as Amazon and eBay.

Inspectors will check whether buyers are informed of the existence of hazardous substances before purchasing the mixtures and whether they are informed of the hazard class of the substances and mixtures.

This can be verified by checking the advertising of a chemical product or by purchasing products and then analyzing them.

For example, inspectors will examine the restricted substances found in products commonly sold online such as toys and textiles and verify the requirements set out in the REACH regulation.

For the Biocidal Products Regulation, the project concerns both authorized and available biocidal products under the transitional regime. The transitional regime is the period of time in which biocidal products are still regulated by national provisions in each Member State.

The project will focus on online product information and online advertisements, but inspectors can visit companies for on-site inspections, whenever they deem it relevant.

The results of the project are expected to be published in late 2021.
