The EU Regulation 2021/1199 has been published which modifies Annex XVII of the REACH Regulation with regard to PAHs (polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons) present in the granules or in the mulch used for synthetic grass sports fields or in the form of a loose fit in playgrounds. .
The PAHs were already present in Annex XVII, given the presence of these substances in plastic products, a ban on placing on the market of olives or mulch containing more than 20 mg / kg of the sum of all PAHs was attached.
When they must be marked with a unique batch identification number.
For the purpose of the restriction, the following definitions apply:
(a) 'granules': mixtures which appear as solid particles with a size of between 1 and 4 mm, consisting of rubber or other vulcanized or polymeric material of recycled or new origin or together from a natural source;
(b) 'mulch' means mixtures which appear as solid flaked particles 4 to 130 mm in length and 10 to 15 mm in width, made from rubber or other vulcanized or polymeric material of recycled or new origin, or research from natural sources;
c) "infill material in synthetic turf sports fields": granules used in synthetic turf sports fields to improve the technical sports performance of synthetic turf;
(d) "use in bulk form in playgrounds or sports applications" means any use of granules or mulch in bulk form in playgrounds or for sporting purposes other than use as infill material in synthetic turf sports fields. " .
The enforcement restriction update from August 10, 2022, material already in use should not be removed.
