Regulation 2022/135 - use of Methyl-N-methylanthranilate in cosmetic products

On 01/02/2022, Regulation EU 2022/135 amending Annex III of Regulation 1223/2009 on cosmetic products was published in the Official Journal.

The reason for the update is the regulatory change of Methyl-N-methylanthranilate (M-N-MA) (CAS No 85-91-6), a fragrance agent used in a wide variety of cosmetic products.

Until now, the ingredient has not been subject to any restrictions or bans within the Regulation.

Following the re-evaluation by SCCS, the ingredient will instead be regulated as follows:

- Maximum concentration allowed in leave-on products: 0.1%. Prohibited for use in sunscreens and products intended for exposure to UV radiation, both natural and artificial.

- Maximum concentration allowed in leave-on products: 0.2%.

The ingredient may also not be used in nitrosating systems and must be stored in nitrite-free containers. The maximum nitrosamine content may not exceed 50 μg/kg.

Cosmetic products that do not comply with these restrictions will not be allowed to be placed on the market from 21 August 2022, and will be prohibited from 21 November 2022.
