SCCS: OPINION ON BENZOPHENONE-4 PUBLISHED

SCCS published the official Opinion - SCCS/1660/23 - on Benzophenone-4 (CAS: 4065-45-6).

The SCCS safety assessment, also taking into account the concern related to the endocrine disrupting properties of the substance, concludes that Benzophenone-4 is safe when used as a UV filter at a maximum concentration of 5% in sunscreens, face and hand creams, all leave-on and rinse-off products (total dermal aggregate), lipsticks, sunscreen sprays (spray and propellant).

Any other use of Benzophenone-4 (e.g. stabiliser for light-exposed cosmetic formulations) must remain within the concentration limits indicated above.
