Ministry of Health information note on plastic food contact materials containing bamboo "powder" or similar substances

The Ministry of Health has published on its website three information notes in relation to plastic food contact materials and articles (MOCA) containing bamboo "powder" or similar substances.
These products, in fact, are not authorised by Regulation (EU) No 10/2011 for use as additives in the manufacture of plastic MOCA, as no risk assessment has been carried out by EFSA and they are considered unsuitable for food contact.

Their use has been the cause of numerous alerts reported in the Rapid Alert System for Food and Feed (RASFF).

The aim of the Ministry, in a coordinated action with the European Commission, is to:
- Identify illegal products
- Block imports
- Remove them from the market
- Inform European producers and distributors of their illegality
- Make European consumers aware of the risk
