CRITERIA FOR DEFINING REUSABLE (NON-DISPOSABLE) TABLEWARE

On April 20, 2026, Law No. 50/2026 was published, converting Decree-Law No. 19 of February 19, 2026, which introduces the technical requirements for classifying plastic tableware as “reusable” and therefore not single-use.

The new rules will take effect on April 21, 2027.

Plastic plates

diameter less than 19 centimeters and weight greater than 45 grams;
diameter between 19 and 24 centimeters and weight greater than 80 grams;
diameter greater than 24 centimeters and weight greater than 110 grams;

Plastic cutlery (forks, knives, spoons, chopsticks)

weight-to-length ratio greater than 0.5 grams per centimeter;

Straws for food use

weight-to-length ratio greater than 0.5 grams per centimeter;

Beverage stirrers

weight-to-length ratio greater than 0.5 grams per centimeter.
