On 9 December 2025, the Swiss Federal Department of Home Affairs (FDHA) updated the Cosmetics Ordinance, introducing more targeted control of furocoumarins in leave-on cosmetic products with potential exposure to sunlight.
The maximum limit of 1 ppm is maintained, but now applies to the sum of eight specific furocoumarins, rather than the entire class of substances.
The eight regulated furocoumarins are:
• Byakangelicol (CAS 61046-59-1)
• Epoxybergamottin (CAS 206978-14-5)
• Isopimpinellin (CAS 482-27-9)
• 5-methoxypsoralen (5-MOP, bergapten; CAS 484-20-8)
• 8-Methoxypsoralen (8-MOP, Methoxypsoralen; CAS 298-81-7)
• Oxipeucedanin (CAS 737-52-0)
• Oxipeucedanin hydrate (CAS 2643-85-8)
• Psoralen (CAS 66-97-7)
The regulation applies to numerous leave-on products that may come into direct contact with sunlight (such as creams, lotions, gels, skin oils, sunscreens and self-tanning products, lip care products, make-up and aftershave products), while excluding, among others: perfumes, deodorants, rinse-off products and night care products.
The requirement will come into force on 1st January 2026, with no transition period: non-compliant products may no longer be marketed, except for stocks already sold by 31st December 2025.
The restriction applies to both Swiss and imported products.
