The UFI code is one of the changes introduced by the EU Regulation 542/2017. This Regulation became Annex VIII of CLP Regulation 1272/2008.

The UFI is a unique alphanumeric code that unequivocally links a product placed on the market and the information available for the treatment of patients.

The UFI must be affixed to the mixture label, preceded by the initials UFI, which must not be translated into the various languages ​​of the European Community.

WHAT IS THE UFI CODE

The UFI code is a code that is assigned using an online generator. The UFI code is created starting from a formulation number and the company VAT number. Once assigned the UFI code it is necessary to validate it before inserting it on the label.

Code with a defined format

• 16 alphanumeric characters
• Use of uppercase letters
• Separated from «-» in 4 blocks
• Avoiding ambiguous letters such as ‘O’, ‘I’, ‘L’, ‘B’ and ‘Z’

WHERE TO INSERT THE UFI CODE:

• during the notification
• on the label preceded by the abbreviation «UFI», not on the packaging
• in the SDS section 1.1 for labeled products and unlabeled industrial products, it should be added to SDS.

WHEN CREATING THE UFI CODE:

The UFI code must be created for hazardous mixtures, it is not mandatory for non-hazardous mixtures, it remains at the discretion of the Company

DEADLINES

The deadline for the inclusion of the UFI code on the label concerns new non-notified products starting from 1 January of:

• 2024 industrial use

For products already placed on the market before 1 January 2021 and therefore already notified, the obligation is from 1 January 2025.

It remains at the discretion of the Companies whether to enter the UFI code before these dates.
