K-REACH

K-REACH is “The Act on the Registration and Evaluation of Chemicals” which is similar to REACH(Registration, Evaluation, Authorization and Restriction of Chemicals). The purpose of K-REACH is to protect public health and the environment through these provisions:

  • Registration of chemical Substances

  • Screening of hazardous chemical substances;

  • Hazard and risk assessment of products containing chemical substances and hazardous substances;

  • Sharing information of chemical substance.

Registration grace period is given to more than 1 ton of pre-registered phase-in substance. The grace period differs according to substances’ hazard and manufacture/import volume.

  • ≥1,000 t/y phase-in Substances or ≥1 t/y CMR substances : by Dec 31 2021

  • 100~1,000 t/y phase-in Substances : by Dec 31 2024

  • 10~100 t/y phase-in Substances : by Dec 31 2027

  • ≥1 t/y phase-in Substances : by Dec 31 2030

WHAT IS K-REACH PRE- REGISTRATION ?

Company or person who manufactures or imports phase-in substances equal to or more than 1 ton per year needs to notify Korea Environment Corporation (KECO) of use information, amount, etc. of the chemical substance.

Only those pre-registered phase-in substances can benefit from registration grace periods, during which one can manufacture or import those pre-registered substances without full registrations.

NOTE:  Manufacturers/importers that manufactured or imported at least one ton per year of an phase-in substance between 2016 and 2018, shall submit application for pre-registration between 1 Jan. 2019 and 30 Jun. 2019.
